Sermon Recap

  • Sara reminded us that as we work to embody and speak about the good news with others, it’s important to remember that we don’t have all the answers, and that it is important to listen well first before speaking.
  • She reminded us of places in the Bible where others either spoke without listening or modeled listening well and longer.
    • Job’s friends didn’t listen well and offered their “right” answers that ended up being wrong.
    • Paul listened and learned about the cultures and contexts of the places he entered so that he could more effectively connect the good news to their lives.
    • Jesus rarely gave direct answers to people’s questions. Instead, he often asked follow-up questions or told stories - inviting further reflection or dialogue.

Action steps:

When entering faith conversations with people:

  • Ask more questions
  • Listen longer with empathy
  • Don’t rush to give answer to questions that aren’t the real, deeper questions being asked.

Yesterday, we also spent time praying for families that were experiencing fear and trauma as a result of the tactics being used by ICE. We would encourage you to continue to pray for our brothers and sisters of all immigration statuses no matter what you ultimately think is the best immigration policy or reform.
