Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Suzanne started by talking about how songs, specifically Christmas Carols, can shape our faith and help us connect with Jesus.  This Advent, we’re going to let some of the great Christmas hymns help us see Jesus more clearly.
  • “Come O Come Emmanuel” and Psalm 22:19-24  itself invite us to name our longings –  grief, confusion, darkness, and injustice.
  • Jesus is the fulfillment of every longing: Immanuel who meets us in sorrow, Wisdom who guides us, Dayspring who brings light, and the Desire of Nations who will establish justice and peace.

Reflection Questions:

  • Which of the longings named in O Come, O Come Emmanuel—grief, direction, light, or justice—speaks most deeply to where you find yourself today, and why?
  • How might Jesus’ identity as Emmanuel, Wisdom, Dayspring, or the King of Peace reshape the way you view your present circumstances?

Below is Chris Tomlin’s version of “Come O Come Emmanuel” with the lyrics. Consider putting this Christmas Carol at the top of your play-list this week.  Since some of the words are dated, see below for a version of the lyrics in a more modern language.

  O Come, O Come, Emmanuel

 Modern Language

O come, O come, Emmanuel,

and free Your people who feel lost and alone.

We’re living in a kind of exile,

waiting for You to come and make things right.

O come, Wisdom from on high,

and show us the path we should take.

Teach us Your ways

so we can walk forward with understanding.

O come, true Light of the world,

and break through the darkness around us.

Shine on those who feel stuck or afraid,

and lead us into a new day.

O come, King of the nations,

and bring peace where there is conflict and division.

Unite what is broken,

and set the world right with Your justice.
