Sermon Recap

  • Pastor Sara talked about Jesus’ proclamation that “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.”
  • She talked about how our level of humility and desperation often correlates with the level of transformation that happens.
  • She used the example of 12-Step programs whose first steps is to, “Admit we are powerless over our addiction and that our lives have become unmanageable.” These programs are some of the most transformational processes precisely because of the level of humility and desperation that pervades every meeting.
  • Pastor Sara urged us to consider naming our “sicknesses” and places that our lives have become unmanageable to be able to receive the kindness and healing from Jesus that can transform us.

Sermon Reflection Questions:

  • What is a time in your life where you were aware that how you were functioning was becoming unmanageable - enough that you were ready to make a change?
  • What makes it hard to name places that you have continuing “sickness?”
  • Do you have hope for change, healing, or transformation? If not, why not?
  • What do you think Jesus wants for you in this season?

Many of us are familiar with AA or other 12-step programs for chemical dependence. However, we may be less familiar with 12-step programs that help us with other areas of unhealthy patterns. CoDA (Codependents Anonymous) is a great resource if you are finding that your relationships are becoming unmanageable. Check out their website below to learn more.
